Create a clean, professional social post or flyer in Canva, using templates and four simple design rules that make anything look better.

Get started

Canva is a free online design tool at canva.com, with apps for phone and computer. Sign up with your email or Google account. The free plan is enough for this course; items marked with a crown are for paid plans.

On the home page, search for what you want to make:

"Instagram post" (a square, 1080 × 1080 pixels)
"Instagram story" or "WhatsApp status" (tall, 1080 × 1920)
"Flyer" (A4 or A5 for printing)

Pick a template you like and click it to open it in the editor. Starting from a template is not cheating; it gives you a layout that already works.

Four rules that make designs look professional

Most amateur designs break one of these. Check your design against all four.

Rule	What it means	Quick fix
Contrast	Text must stand out clearly from its background	Dark text on light, or light on dark. Add a solid shape behind text on busy photos.
Alignment	Things line up along invisible lines	Drag items until Canva's pink guide lines appear, then let go.
Space	Leave empty space around things	Remove at least one element. Keep text away from the edges.
Few fonts	Use one or two fonts	One for headings, one for the rest. Never five.

Also decide the one thing people should see first, such as the headline or the price, and make it clearly the biggest.

Make it yours

Replace the template's content with your own:

Text: click any text box to edit it. Keep the words short. A flyer headline of five words beats a paragraph.
Photos: use Uploads to add your own pictures, then drag one onto a template photo to replace it.
Colours: click an element, then the colour square in the toolbar. Use your brand colours consistently, ideally two or three.
Logo: upload it and place it in a corner, not too large.

Check, download and resize

Before downloading, zoom out and look at the design as a small image, the way people will see it while scrolling. Can you read the headline? Is it obvious what to do next (call, order, visit)?

Then click Share → Download:

PNG for social media posts and images with text (sharpest).
JPG for photo-heavy images where a smaller file matters.
PDF Print for flyers you'll print.

To make the same design in another size, such as turning a post into a story, use Resize (paid) or create a new design in the new size and copy your elements across.

Try it

Search Canva for "Instagram post" and choose a template.
Change the text to advertise something real: your business, an event, or a service you offer.
Replace at least one photo with your own, and use no more than two fonts.
Check the four rules: contrast, alignment, space, few fonts.
Download it as a PNG.
